The Big Project

Our philosophy and vision

We understand culture to be an essential component in society, in creating beneficial global change from the ground upwards. Drawing audiences and visitors from near and far to experience a multi-sensory programme of high quality events, we wish to engage participation and stimulate creativity; to exchange ideas, debate issues and communicate opinions through an expressive process.

We aim to inspire individuals to seek a richer, more connected existence. An existence that places our natural environment and community before ourselves.

Our project will be anchored in our local community. Through mutually beneficial collaborations with valued partners in our local and wider network, we will also connect our audiences and visitors to other important, engaging and enlightening projects and experiences.

The term sustainability has been widely used for a number of years in reference to protecting our natural environment. But we now realise that maintaining the status quo is not enough. We need to restore some of the damage already caused.

Therefore our common philosophy/ mantra should be regeneration.

Regeneration of ourselves, our communities and our natural environment.

Our manifest

Programme of work 2020

Through generous support from LAG, Den Jyske Kunstfond and other private donors we aim, over the course of 2020, to complete the following:

  • to develop a detailed business plan through a series of network meetings and workshops facilitated by TheCrowd® (Ole Mølgaard & Leif Lønsmann),
  • to commission C.F. Møller to provide an outline design concept for the site (including a carbon neutral concert house, geodesic house, natural amphitheatre, up to 1.000m² of lake); the output is to include sketches / visualisations, indicative build costs and operational running costs,
  • to design a fully-integrated environmental plan to make the site as self-sustainable and regenerative as possible (in collaboration with C.F. Møller and Samsø Energiakademi),
  • to commission Cecil Rye Olsen and Birgit Rothmann to design a permagarden which connects the built and natural environment of the site,
  • to obtain full planning approval – an outline proposal has been submitted to Samsø Municipality. The period for public review has just ended so we hope to receive planning consent by 1 April 2020 – see the planning document here,
  • to create an almennyttig erhvervsdrivende fond as the over-arching organisational framework for the project, and
  • to appoint an advisory board to provide long term governance of the project.

By the end of 2020 we expect to have developed a portfolio to present to major foundations and philanthropists to generate the funds necessary to realise our ambitions.

We envisage the project as an integral part of Samsø’s long term social, cultural and economic development and to be self-financing in the long term.

We are humbled by the strong support from our local community, our international artistic community and Samsø Municipality.
